A magnetic survey with a drone allows the measuring of at least 10 ha a day on a very steep terrain. In the first instance, a complete easement visualising through raw cartography is possible, but is not sufficient for precisely locating the UXOs.

The Magsalia expert inversion system produces 3D tomographic pictures from the collected magnetic data. The interpretation of these pictures provides a classification of magnetic anomalies.

The survey lasted 2 days and was followed by a quick extrication of the magnetic anomalies. 24 anomalies have been pegged on the field.

Context

The Tellus Environment company has been commissioned by the infrastructure service of the French Ministry of Defence, located in Rennes, for underground inspection of the military ERM of Vannes and pyrotechnic diagnosis. Planners have incidentally discovered a shell landfill, while the historical study did not mention any particular risk. As the site has been occupied and built since 1,5 century, the issue at stake lies in the realisation of a discriminating diagnosis for buried objects, in order to differentiate infrastructure from underground networks and buried ammunition.

Magnetic prospecting as much as low-frequency electromagnetic prospecting (conductivity meter) and high-frequency prospecting (ground-penetrating radar) were conducted owing to the objectives and context of this mission.

Context

The Tellus Environment company has been commissioned by Mr Laurent Bousquet, from the ARCHI-Triad company, for mapping a development area in Lion-sur-Mer and thus detecting war remnants. The discovery of a 25 kg shell on the considered plot, as well several other ones on the nearby plots, echoes the bombing of the town during the Second World War and thus indicates the potential risks to be found in this zone during the excavation process. This situation justifies conducting magnetic prospecting. Previous development work had to be stopped.

The distribution substation in the town of Mûr-de-Bretagne, which provides power supply to the naval base of Lorient, was bombed by the Allies during the Second World War. The client needs to dig a trench for the electric cables, without triggering any pyrotechnic remediation process.

It is an extremely disturbed zone, as it gathers a set of infrastructure with a highly magnetic signature (bunker, electric installation, transmission tower, rails, reinforced concrete, etc.).

What is at stake is to secure the digging of a predefined trench (100 m long, x 1 m wide x 0,80 m deep).

In the context of the reconfiguration of the 128 Airbase, located in Frescaty near Metz, soil surveys are necessary for pollutants detection.

Theses surveys are to be done in a First World War “zone rouge” with severe pyrotechnic risk.

The issue lies in locating blank zones, without any targets in there, and securing 82 survey pits on a very disturbed area from a magnetic point of view (ballast, ferrous waste, etc.).
